Breakout Sessions #8: Hard Hats to Helmets - Why Should I Make the Change? (Intermediate)

The iconic construction hard hat, a symbol of pride for the construction worker, has changed very little in 50 years. Developments in the understanding of the causes and prevention of debilitating and often fatal head injuries is leading to a revolutionary change in the way we protect our people from head injuries on the jobsite.

The classic hard hat is about to change forever. This presentation will focus on new technology available today to minimize the effects of falls and impacts to the head of the worker. We will also focus on new technologies, already in development, that can further provide protection from head injuries. Industry requirements (OSHA, ANSI) will be reviewed, and the application of worldwide standards (EN) will be discussed and applied to new helmet development and implementation. We will also discuss new industry collaborations for better testing and rating of helmets.

Presentation learning objectives:

  • Review current standards and requirements for head protection in the construction industry.
  • Review improvements to the standards and testing that indicates the degree of improvement that can be achieved.
  • Current efforts to change the industry acceptance of helmets as an alternative to hard hats.
  • Examination of new technologies utilized in other activities such as biking and football and how this research can be applied to construction helmets.

Breakout Sessions #9: Fleet Risk Management - Are Your Drivers and/or Vehicles Your Biggest Loss Exposure? (Intermediate)

What is the number #1 killer of our employees? It can be argued that it is driving. Every organization has the potential for Fleet and Driver exposure to not only auto liability but workers’ compensation and general liability.

“In recent years, the commercial auto insurance market has been severely impacted by social inflation and a big increase in nuclear jury verdicts demanding payouts of $40 million-$50 million, which standard insurance policies were not meant to cover. These rising litigation costs have impacted insurer claim payouts, loss ratios, and, ultimately, how much policyholders have to pay for commercial auto insurance.”

The session will explore the recent focus of an insurance company and their contractor partners’ campaign addressing their fleet exposures.

This session will also explore key lessons learned and focus areas to reduce these exposures as well as tools and resources to share with your teams.

However, with this advanced technology comes a set of unique safety challenges and requirements that must be addressed to protect workers and ensure safe operations.

In this session, “Portable Laser Welding – What is Required for Safety Officers?”, we will explore the safety considerations and responsibilities associated with portable laser welding. Participants will be made aware of the hazards inherent to laser welding, such as eye injuries, skin burns, and exposure to harmful fumes, and how to mitigate these risks effectively. We will also cover the critical role of Safety Officers in overseeing laser welding operations, including the necessary training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and environmental controls that must be in place to maintain a safe working environment.

General Session: The Ripple Effect

The ‘Ripple Effect’ – Brad has a unique way of making the audience think about how their family would handle it if they were the one seriously injured, or killed. As an inspirational speaker, he makes them realize how far, how fast, and how deep that ripple effect goes. When he finishes talking about a ‘True Life’ paper his youngest daughter had to write in high school, and he continues on about a discussion he had with his middle daughter 6 years after the explosions, in which she said to him, “Dad, was I not important enough to you …..”, the audience will be thinking beyond themselves, many of them for the first time.

Brad’s desire and passion is to speak to every employee of every company BEFORE they are injured, or killed! Now, as a motivational safety speaker, Brad makes a massive contribution to changing, or strengthening, the safety culture for the companies he speaks for. Speaking on the importance of workplace safety, Brad can get the attention of every listener, from a new-hire to the 30 year veteran. The feedback he receives is proof of this.

Brad’s just another regular guy, asking – “Do you think it can’t happen to you?”
